In the eventful journey towards fostering sustainable energy practices and bolstering global decarbonization efforts, the UAE National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) have inked a strategic collaboration agreement (SCA). The accord solidifies their commitment to jointly explore low-carbon energy technologies, marking a pivotal step in advancing net-zero ambitions in the UAE, Azerbaijan, and beyond.

The collaboration is not a standalone initiative but builds upon the strategic bilateral energy cooperation that has been flourishing between the UAE and Azerbaijan. Both ADNOC and SOCAR proudly stand as founding signatories of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, a significant commitment unveiled at COP28. This charter outlines shared targets, including the elimination of routine flaring and zeroing out methane emissions by 2030, with a broader vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Exploring the Frontiers of Sustainable Technologies

Central to the collaboration is the exploration of blue hydrogen, carbon management, and geothermal technologies. Blue Hydrogen: One of the focal points of the collaboration is the advancement of blue hydrogen technologies. Blue hydrogen, produced through a process that captures and stores carbon emissions, holds immense promise in transitioning away from conventional fossil fuels.
Carbon Management: The collaboration also places a significant emphasis on carbon management technologies. As industries worldwide grapple with the challenge of reducing carbon footprints, innovative solutions for capturing and utilizing carbon emissions are critical.
Geothermal Technologies: Geothermal energy, a sustainable and renewable source, is also under the spotlight. ADNOC, having recently announced the successful start-up of geothermal district cooling in Masdar City, is taking the lead in harnessing the Earth’s natural heat as a viable energy source.

The strategic collaboration doesn’t exist in isolation but is deeply rooted in the existing bilateral energy cooperation between the UAE and Azerbaijan. Notably, ADNOC holds a 30% stake in the Absheron gas and condensate field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea, illustrating the robust ties between the two entities.
